Drumming classes for the whole family.
From September 2016, we will be running a weekly family drumming class for a group of 14-16 players. We want to encourage parents to come and make music with their children. To this end, parents and children together will be given priority for places. Thereafter if there are spaces, we are happy for children aged 8+ or adults without a child to come by themselves.
In this class we will explore a variety of rhythms derived from the West African Djembe tradition. In a fun and playful way, we will see how these different rhythms work together, and how they can be arranged into exciting pieces ready for us to perform.
There will be some singing, body percussion, rhythmic games and movement to support our Djembe playing and general musical understanding. All welcome, no experience needed.
We will ask you to provide your own drums!
The reason for this is that it will enable you to practice in between sessions, even if only briefly a couple of times in the week, and this will make a huge difference to the ease and the speed with which the whole group progresses. It also signals a commitment both to learning the drums and to the group, as well as something that is standard when you learn any other instrument.
We have sourced good drums and negotiated a good a price which we pass on.
We have also kept the termly fee lower than for other groups in recognition of the fact that an additional sum of money will have to go out initially. We are also happy to help sell drums on when the time comes.
Beat Box is taught by Tobias Sturmer.
It runs at 11.30– 12.15 on Saturday mornings at Cutteslowe Primary School in Wren Road.
